126 The Orphanage (El Orfanato, 2007)

Halloween season continues as we discuss the gothic supernatural horror The Orphanage (El Orfanato), a Spanish horror film full of spooky kids, great performances, grief, fairy tales, games, beautiful cinematography, red sweaters, and some good old fashioned terror.

The Orphanage (Spanish: El orfanato) is a 2007 Spanish gothic supernatural horror film and the debut feature of Spanish filmmaker J. A. Bayona. The film stars Belén Rueda as Laura, Fernando Cayo as her husband, Carlos, and Roger Príncep as their adopted son Simón. The plot centers on Laura, who returns to her childhood home, an orphanage. Laura plans to turn the house into a home for disabled children, but after an argument with Laura, Simón goes missing.

 

"The Monkey's Paw" is a supernatural short story by author W. W. Jacobs, first published in England in the collection The Lady of the Barge in 1902. In the story, three wishes are granted to the owner of The Monkey's Paw, but the wishes come with an enormous price for interfering with fate. It has been adapted many times in other media, including The Twilight Zone, The Simpson’s, and Are You Afraid Of The Dark.

Norman Gene Macdonald (October 17, 1959[ii] – September 14, 2021) was a Canadian stand-up comedian, writer, and actor known for his deadpan style.

Early in his career, he wrote for the sitcom Roseanne. In 1993, Macdonald was hired as a writer and cast member on Saturday Night Live (SNL), spending a total of five seasons on the show, which included anchoring the show's Weekend Update segment for three and a half seasons,[1] during which time he also made guest appearances on shows such as The Drew Carey Show and NewsRadio. After leaving SNL, he wrote and starred in the 1998 film Dirty Work and headlined his own sitcom, The Norm Show, from 1999 to 2001.

In 2013, Macdonald started the video podcast chat show, Norm Macdonald Live, on which he interviewed comedians and other celebrities. In 2018, he released Norm Macdonald Has a Show, a Netflix talk show with a similar premise to his podcast. Throughout his career, he appeared in numerous movies and was a regular favorite comedian panelist of talk show hosts such as Conan O'Brien, David Letterman, Dennis Miller, and Howard Stern, with many considering him to be the ultimate late night comedy guest.[2] He was also a voice actor, best known for providing voice roles in Mike Tyson Mysteries, The Orville, and the Dr. Dolittle films.

 

Color Out of Space is a 2019 American science fiction Lovecraftian horror[8] film directed and co-written by Richard Stanley, based on the short story "The Colour Out of Space" by H. P. Lovecraft. It stars Nicolas Cage, Joely Richardson, Elliot Knight, Madeleine Arthur, Q'orianka Kilcher and Tommy Chong. This is Stanley's only feature film since his firing from The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996).[9] According to Stanley, it is the first film in a trilogy of Lovecraft adaptations, which he hopes to continue with an adaptation of "The Dunwich Horror".

 

Dangerous Lies is a 2020 American thriller film, directed by Michael Scott from a screenplay by David Golden.[1] It stars Camila Mendes, Jessie T. Usher, Jamie Chung, Cam Gigandet, Sasha Alexander and Elliott Gould.[2] It was released on April 30, 2020, by Netflix.[3] In October 2020, Dangerous Lies was nominated for People's Choice Awards in the drama movie category.

The film portrays four teenage girls—three of whom are named Heather—in a clique at an Ohio high school, one of whose lives is disrupted by the arrival of a misanthrope intent on murdering the popular students and staging their deaths as suicides.

Only Murders in the Building is an American mystery-comedy television series, created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman. The series consists of ten episodes and it premiered on August 31, 2021 on Hulu. Only Murders in the Building follows three strangers, played by Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, who share an obsession with a true crime podcast (modeled after Serial).[4][5] After a murder occurs in their building, the three neighbors decide to start their own show to follow their investigation. Only Murders in the Building received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its comedic approach to crime fiction and the performance of its three core characters.

Rilakkuma and Kaoru (リラックマとカオルさん, Rirakkuma to Kaoru-san) is a 2019 stop-motion animation series created by Dwarf Studio in cooperation with San-X that premiered on Netflix on April 19, 2019. On October 2020, it was announced another stop-motion series Rilakkuma's Theme Park Adventure will be released on Netflix. It will have the same production staff as the previous series.

The plot revolves around a recently deceased couple (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) who become ghosts haunting their former home, and an obnoxious, devious poltergeist named Betelgeuse (pronounced and occasionally spelled Beetlejuice in the film and portrayed by Michael Keaton) from the Netherworld who tries to scare away the new inhabitants (Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones, and Winona Ryder).

Cat's Cradle is a satirical postmodern novel, with science fiction elements, by American writer Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut's fourth novel, it was first published in 1963, exploring and satirizing issues of science, technology, the purpose of religion, and the arms race, often through the use of black humor. After turning down his original thesis in 1947, the University of Chicago awarded Vonnegut his master's degree in anthropology in 1971 for Cat's Cradle.

 

Below Deck is an American reality television series on Bravo that debuted on July 1, 2013, developed by Mark Cronin, Rebecca Taylor Henning, and Doug Henning.[1][2] Announced in April 2012, Below Deck chronicles the lives of the crew members who work and reside aboard a superyacht during charter season.[3] It shows the crew as they deal with their personal issues in order to make their professional careers work.

The Cat Returns is a 2002 Japanese animated fantasy[3] film directed by Hiroyuki Morita, produced by Toshio Suzuki and Nozomu Takahashi, written by Reiko Yoshida, based on the manga The Cat Returns by Aoi Hiiragi, with music by Yuji Nomi, animated by Studio Ghibli. This is Hiroyuki Morita's first and only film so far as director for Studio Ghibli.

A spin-off of Whisper of the Heart, it was theatrically released in Japan on July 20, 2002 through Toho and in 2005 in the United States through Walt Disney Home Entertainment.[4] It received an Excellence Prize at the 2002 Japan Media Arts Festival. GKIDS re-issued the film on Blu-ray and DVD on January 16, 2018 under a new deal with Studio Ghibli.

In our discussion of the Film Noir Classic Double Indemnity we talk Nazis, German Expressionism, women in the workplace, censorship, femme fatales, anti-heroes, wigs, a turning point of American culture, and drive through bars. Y'know, the regular stuff.

Double Indemnity is a 1944 American psychological thriller film noir directed by Billy Wilder, co-written by Wilder and Raymond Chandler, and produced by Buddy DeSylva and Joseph Sistrom. The screenplay was based on James M. Cain's 1943 novel of the same name, which originally appeared as an eight-part serial in Liberty magazine, beginning in February 1936.

The film stars Fred MacMurray as an insurance salesman, Barbara Stanwyck as a provocative housewife who wishes her husband were dead, and Edward G. Robinson as a claims adjuster whose job is to find phony claims. The term "double indemnity" refers to a clause in certain life insurance policies that doubles the payout in rare cases when the death is accidental.

Funny Face is a 1957 American musical romantic comedy film directed by Stanley Donen and written by Leonard Gershe, containing assorted songs by George and Ira Gershwin. Although having the same title as the 1927 Broadway musical Funny Face by the Gershwin brothers, and featuring the same male star (Fred Astaire), the plot is totally different and only four of the songs from the stage musical are included. Alongside Astaire, the film stars Audrey Hepburn and Kay Thompson.

 

Educated (2018) is a memoir by the American author Tara Westover. Westover recounts overcoming her survivalist Mormon family in order to go to college, and emphasizes the importance of education in enlarging her world. She details her journey from her isolated life in the mountains of Idaho to completing a PhD program in history at Cambridge University. She started college at the age of 17 having had no formal education. She explores her struggle to reconcile her desire to learn with the world she inhabited with her father.

The Darjeeling Limited is a 2007 American comedy-drama film directed by Wes Anderson which he co-produced with Scott Rudin, Roman Coppola and Lydia Dean Pilcher and co-wrote with Coppola and Jason Schwartzman. The film stars Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Schwartzman as three estranged brothers who agree to meet in India a year after their father's funeral for a "spiritual journey" aboard a luxury train. Downton Abbey is a British historical drama television series set in the early 20th century, created and co-written by Julian Fellowes. The series first aired on ITV in the United Kingdom on 26 September 2010, and in the United States on PBS, which supported production of the series as part of its Masterpiece Classic anthology, on 9 January 2011.

 

Cymande (pronounced /sɪˈmɑːndeɪ/ sih-MAHN-day) is a British funk group that was originally active in the early 1970s. The band name derives from a calypso word for "Dove", which symbolises peace and love;"Dove" is also the title of one of their best-known songs. With a membership deriving from several Caribbean nations, Cymande were noted for an eclectic mix of funk, soul, reggae, rock, African music, calypso, and jazz that they called "nyah-rock".

105 Chungking Express (重庆森林, 1994)

This week we discuss the Wong Kar Wai classic Chungking Express, the changing face of Hong Kong, stillness and transience, quirkiness and metaphor, and what a romantic comedy should be.

Chungking Express is a 1994 Hong Kong romantic crime comedy-drama film written and directed by Wong Kar-wai. The film consists of two stories told in sequence, each about a lovesick Hong Kong policeman mulling over his relationship with a woman. The first story stars Takeshi Kaneshiro as a cop obsessed with his breakup with a woman named May, and his encounter with a mysterious drug smuggler (Brigitte Lin). The second stars Tony Leung as a police officer roused from his gloom over the loss of his flight attendant girlfriend (Valerie Chow) by the attentions of a quirky snack bar worker (Faye Wong).

"Chungking" in the title refers to Chungking Mansions in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, where Wong grew up in the 1960s. "Express" refers to the food stand Midnight Express, located in Lan Kwai Fong, an area in Central, Hong Kong.

098 Leap Year (2010)

We discuss Leap Year, which is the love story of a woman who falls down a lot and a man who is near her. We answer the big questions, like; will Samantha still love it? Can you have a Romantic Comedy without romance and comedy? Who do the creators of this movie think less of, women or the Irish?

 

Leap Year is a 2010 romantic comedy road film[5] directed by Anand Tucker and written by Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan. Loosely based on I Know Where I'm Going!, the film stars Amy Adams and Matthew Goode.

The film follows a real estate worker who heads to Ireland to ask her boyfriend to accept her wedding proposal on leap day, when tradition supposedly holds that men cannot refuse a woman's proposal for marriage. Her plans are interrupted by a series of events and are further complicated when she hires an Irish innkeeper to take her to her boyfriend in Dublin.[6] Principal photography took place in County Wicklow, Dublin, County Mayo, and County Galway, with filming taking place in and around the Aran Islands, Connemara, Temple Bar, Georgian Dublin, Wicklow National Park, and Olaf Street, Waterford.

097 New Amsterdam, Avatar: The Last Airbender, & Leap Year Preview

After an introduction which is sure to anger the large anti-vax population, Samantha suggests New Amsterdam, a show destined to fill the Grey’s Anatomy shaped hole in your heart, Indy is deep in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and then we preview next week’s movie; the 2010 Romantic Comedy Leap year.

New Amsterdam is an American medical drama television series, based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer, that premiered on September 25, 2018 on NBC. The series was created by David Schulner and stars Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher, and Tyler Labine.

Avatar: The Last Airbender, known as Avatar: The Legend of Aang in some regions, is an American animated television series produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios. It was co-created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, with Aaron Ehasz as head writer. It aired on Nickelodeon for three seasons, from February 2005 to July 2008.[2] Avatar is set in an Asiatic-like world in which some people can manipulate one of the four elements—water, earth, fire, or air—with telekinetic variants of the Chinese martial arts known as "bending". The only individual who can bend all four elements, the "Avatar", is responsible for maintaining harmony between the world's four nations, and serves as the bridge between the spirit world and the physical world. The show is presented in a style that combines anime with American cartoons, and relies on the imagery of mainly East Asian culture, with some South Asian, New World, and Inuit and Sireniki influences.

Raging Bull is a 1980 American biographical sports drama film directed by Martin Scorsese, produced by Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler and adapted by Paul Schrader and Mardik Martin from Jake LaMotta's 1970 memoir Raging Bull: My Story. The film, distributed by United Artists, stars Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta, an Italian-American middleweight boxer whose self-destructive and obsessive rage, sexual jealousy, and animalistic appetite destroyed his relationship with his wife and family. Also featured in the film are Joe Pesci as Joey, LaMotta's well-intentioned brother and manager who tries to help Jake battle his inner demons, and Cathy Moriarty as his wife. Before Sunrise is a 1995 American romantic drama film directed by Richard Linklater and written by Linklater and Kim Krizan. The film follows Jesse (Ethan Hawke), a young American man, and Céline (Julie Delpy), a young French woman, who meet on a train and disembark in Vienna, where they spend the night walking around the city and getting to know and falling in love with each other.
The plot is considered minimalistic, consisting mostly of the characters' conversation as they navigate the city. The two characters' contrasting ideas and perspectives on life and love are detailed. Jesse is a romantic disguised as a cynic, and Céline is seemingly a romantic, albeit with some doubts. Taking place over the course of one night, their limited time together is always on their minds, and leads to each revealing a lot about themselves partly because they both initially believe they will never see each other again.

Before Sunset is a 2004 American romantic drama film, the sequel to Before Sunrise (1995). Like its predecessor, the film was directed by Richard Linklater. He shares screenplay credit with actors Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, and with Kim Krizan, the screenwriter for the first film featuring these two characters.
The film picks up the story in Before Sunrise of the young American man (Hawke) and French woman (Delpy) who spent a passionate night together in Vienna. Their paths intersect nine years later in Paris, and the film appears to take place in real time as they spend an afternoon together.

Hard Boiled (Chinese: 辣手神探)[2] is a 1992 Hong Kong action film directed by John Woo and written by Barry Wong. The film stars Chow Yun-fat as Inspector "Tequila" Yuen, Tony Leung Chiu-wai as Alan, an undercover cop, and Anthony Wong as Johnny Wong, a leader of the criminal triads.
Hard Boiled was John Woo's last Hong Kong film before his transition to Hollywood. After making films that glamorized gangsters (and receiving criticism for doing so), Woo wanted to make a Dirty Harry styled film to glamorize the police. After the death of screenwriter Barry Wong, the film's screenplay underwent constant changes during filming. New characters such as Mad Dog and Mr. Woo were introduced, while the original plotline of a baby-poisoning psychopath was cut.

Instant Hotel is an Australian reality television series which began airing on the Seven Network on 7 November 2017.[1] The series follows homeowners who have transformed their homes into hotels and are individually judged by each other to receive the highest scores with the winner to win an ultimate prize.

 

The Before trilogy consists of three films directed by Richard Linklater, and starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy as lovers Jesse and Céline at three different parts of their lives. The trilogy consists of the films Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004) and Before Midnight (2013). Filmed and set at nine-year intervals, each film takes place over the course of a few hours. A short sequence in the animated anthology film Waking Life also features the characters.

Lady Snowblood (Japanese: 修羅雪姫, Hepburn: Shurayuki-hime) is a 1973 Japanese jidaigeki film directed by Toshiya Fujita and starring Meiko Kaji.[2] It is based on the manga series of the same name, recounting the tale of Yuki, a woman who seeks vengeance upon three of the people who raped her mother and killed her father and brother. The film's narrative is told out of chronological order, jumping between present and past events.
Lady Snowblood was released theatrically in Japan on December 1, 1973, and was distributed by Toho. It spawned a sequel, Love Song of Vengeance (1974), and served as inspiration for the Quentin Tarantino film Kill Bill.

Schitt's Creek (styled Schitt$ Creek) is a Canadian television sitcom created by Dan Levy and his father Eugene Levy that aired on CBC Television from January 13, 2015, to April 7, 2020.^[1] It consists of 80 episodes spread over six seasons.^[2][3] Produced by Not a Real Company Productions^[4] and Anonymous Content, the series follows the trials and tribulations of the formerly wealthy Rose family when they are forced to relocate to Schitt's Creek, a small town they once purchased as a joke.^[5] Now living in a motel, Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) and Moira Rose (Catherine O'Hara)—along with their adult children, David (Dan Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy)—must adjust to life without money and with each other.^[5]

Goat is a Swedish alternative and experimental fusion music group. Superstore is an American sitcom television series that premiered on NBC on November 30, 2015.^[2] The series was created by Justin Spitzer, who served as an executive producer for four seasons.^[3][4] Starring America Ferrera (who also serves as an executive producer) until her departure in the sixth season and Ben Feldman (who also serves as a producer), Superstore follows a group of employees working at "Cloud 9", store number 1217, a fictional big-box store in St. Louis, Missouri. The ensemble and supporting cast includes Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, Nico Santos, Nichole Sakura, Mark McKinney, and Kaliko Kauahi.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is a 2010 Finnish fantasy film written and directed by Jalmari Helander about people living near the Korvatunturi mountain who discover the secret behind Santa Claus. The film is based on the 2003 short film Rare Exports Inc., and its 2005 sequel Rare Exports: The Official Safety Instructions, by Jalmari Helander and Juuso Helander, both of which involve a company that traps wild Santa Clauses and trains and exports them to locations around the world.

080 Parks and Recreation (2009-2015)

In an all out love fest, we look at the NBC mockumentary comedy Parks and Recreation! After arguing about nose-blowing, our hosts finally agree on something as they analyze the characters, friendships, and optimism that make Parks & Rec great.

Instant Family is a 2018 American family comedy-drama starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne as parents who adopt three young children, played by Isabela Moner, Gustavo Escobar (Gustavo Quiroz), and Julianna Gamiz. Also starring Margo Martindale, Julie Hagerty, Tig Notaro, and Octavia Spencer, the film is directed by Sean Anders, who wrote the screenplay with John Morris, based in part on Anders' own experiences.

Instant Family was released in the United States on November 16, 2018. It grossed over $120 million worldwide, and was called an "earnest, heartwarming comedy" by critics, who also praised the performances
