134 The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Monday Dec 06, 2021
Monday Dec 06, 2021
Our Christmas extravaganza continues with The Muppet Christmas Carol, which is summarized by Samantha as “A bad dude is visited by 3 ghosts, it scares him, and he becomes nice.” It combines 2 beloved worlds and we discuss the existence of an afterlife, the birth of Christmas traditions, fantastic performances from Michael Caine and several muppets, and why this movie inexplicably works.
The Muppet Christmas Carol is a 1992 Christmas musical comedy directed by Brian Henson (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Jerry Juhl. Adapted from the 1843 novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, it stars Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge, alongside Muppet performers Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Jerry Nelson, and Frank Oz. Although artistic license is taken to suit the aesthetic of the Muppets, The Muppet Christmas Carol otherwise follows Dickens's original story closely.[4] It is the fourth theatrical film in The Muppets franchise, and the first to be produced following the deaths of the Muppets creator Jim Henson and the performer Richard Hunt; the film is dedicated to both.
The film was released in the United States on December 11, 1992, by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution. It received modest box office success and mostly positive reviews. It is the first Muppets film to be produced by Walt Disney Pictures, whose parent company would later acquire the Muppets franchise in 2004.

We discuss the War on Christmas (and how Christmas is clearly winning) Indy pontificates on the classic, but surprisingly solemn, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Samantha recounts the twists, turns, and switches of Netflix’s The Princess Switch Trilogy, and we preview next week’s festive watch The Muppet Christmas Carol.
A Charlie Brown Christmas is a 1965 animated television special. It is the first TV special based on the comic strip Peanuts, by Charles M. Schulz. Produced by Lee Mendelson and directed by Bill Melendez, the program made its debut on CBS on December 9, 1965. In the special, Charlie Brown finds himself depressed despite the onset of the cheerful holiday season. Lucy suggests he direct a neighborhood Christmas play, but his best efforts are ignored and mocked by his peers when he chooses a real, but puny, Christmas tree as a centerpiece. After Linus speaks of the true meaning of Christmas, the neighborhood decorates the tree as a Christmas gift to Charlie Brown.
The Princess Switch is a 2018 American Christmas romantic comedy film directed by Mike Rohl from a screenplay by Robin Bernheim and Megan Metzger. The film stars Vanessa Hudgens, Sam Palladio and Nick Sagar.
The film's concept of two people running into one another who look identical and switch places comes from Mark Twain's 1881 novel The Prince and the Pauper.
It was released on November 16, 2018, by Netflix. It was followed by a sequel, The Princess Switch: Switched Again, which premiered on November 19, 2020 and The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star, which premiered on November 18, 2021.

Indy talks about Southern Hip-Hop pioneers The Geto Boys, Scarface, and his autobiography Diary of a Madman, Samantha recommends the Old Hollywood historical fiction The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and we introduce next week’s watch, the (sort of) romantic comedy I’m A Cyborg But That’s Okay from Korean auteur Park Chan-wook!
Brad Terrence Jordan (born November 9, 1970), better known by his stage name Scarface, is an American rapper and record producer best known as a member of the Geto Boys, a hip hop group from Houston, Texas.[2] He grew up in Houston and is originally from the city's South Acres (Crestmont Park) neighborhood.[3] In 2012, The Source ranked him #16 on their list of the Top 50 Lyricists of All Time,[4] while About.com ranked him #6 on its list of the 50 Greatest MCs of Our Time (1987–2007).
The Geto Boys (originally spelled Ghetto Boys) is an American hip hop group originally formed in Houston, Texas. The group was formed in 1987.[1] The Geto Boys enjoyed success in the 1990s with the group's classic lineup consisting of Bushwick Bill, Scarface and Willie D, earning several certified albums and hit singles, including "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" which reached No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs and #23 on the Billboard Hot 100.[2]
The Geto Boys earned notoriety for lyrics covering controversial topics such as misogyny, gore, psychotic experiences, and necrophilia. About.com ranked the Geto Boys No. 10 on its list of the 25 Best Rap Groups of All-Time, describing them as "southern rap pioneers who paved the way for future southern hip-hop acts."
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a historical fiction novel by American author Taylor Jenkins Reid and published by Atria Books in 2017. The novel tells the story of the fictional Old Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo, who at the age of 79 decides to give a final interview to an unknown journalist, Monique Grant. According to Reid, Evelyn Hugo was loosely based in part on actresses Elizabeth Taylor, who was married eight times to seven different men, and Ava Gardner, who revealed the secrets of her life to a journalist which was eventually published as Ava Gardner: The Secret Conversations. Reid also discusses how Rita Hayworth was a big influence on the character Evelyn Hugo. Hayworth, whose father was a Spaniard, had a very similar start to Hugo which can be seen in the beginning of the novel.

Monday Oct 25, 2021
Monday Oct 25, 2021
We’re discussing Practical Magic, a Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman film full of witches, ghosts, backwards horse riding, cactus pancakes, self stirring coffee cups, death beetles, and sisterhood. Sometimes. But usually not.
Plus controversial opinions on Fleetwood Mac and it's hanged, not hung. I guess it depends what you are talking about.
Practical Magic is a 1998 American romantic comedy fantasy film based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman. The film was directed by Griffin Dunne and stars Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Aidan Quinn, and Goran Višnjić.
Bullock and Kidman play sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who have always known they were different from other people - they are witches. Raised by their aunts after their parents' death, the sisters grew up in a household that was anything but normal — their aunts fed them brownies for breakfast and taught them the uses of practical magic. But being a member of the Owens family carries a curse: The men they fall in love with are doomed to an untimely death. Now adult women with very different personalities, the quiet Sally and the fiery Gillian must use all of their powers to fight the family curse and a swarm of supernatural forces that could take away all the Owenses' lives.

This week we discuss the Wong Kar Wai classic Chungking Express, the changing face of Hong Kong, stillness and transience, quirkiness and metaphor, and what a romantic comedy should be.
Chungking Express is a 1994 Hong Kong romantic crime comedy-drama film written and directed by Wong Kar-wai. The film consists of two stories told in sequence, each about a lovesick Hong Kong policeman mulling over his relationship with a woman. The first story stars Takeshi Kaneshiro as a cop obsessed with his breakup with a woman named May, and his encounter with a mysterious drug smuggler (Brigitte Lin). The second stars Tony Leung as a police officer roused from his gloom over the loss of his flight attendant girlfriend (Valerie Chow) by the attentions of a quirky snack bar worker (Faye Wong).
"Chungking" in the title refers to Chungking Mansions in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, where Wong grew up in the 1960s. "Express" refers to the food stand Midnight Express, located in Lan Kwai Fong, an area in Central, Hong Kong.
